While social networks in recent days are reporting and following the status of Alireza Rajaie, a former political prisoner whose illness led to advanced cancer due to lack of attention from prison authorities, and in spite of the fact that the judiciary’s spokesman does not admit their responsibility for such deficiencies, Atena Daemi, for the similar reasons is suffering from simple kidney and gallbladder problems that began several months ago, which has the potential injuries for bile ducts due to retaliation by the head of Evin’s infirmary.
According to the report of Human Rights Activists News Agency in Iran (HRANA), in late May, at the end of the Atena Daemi’s hunger strike, a specialist physician at an out-of-prison clinic visited this prisoner and because of gallbladder problems, ordered her to be admitted to hospital. However, with the intervention of Evin Prison infirmary and “Abbas Khani”, head of the infirmary who accused Ms. Daemi of simulation, she was returned to the prison and did not get the necessary medical services.
The problems that were initially at the level of “the beginning of gallstone obstruction and primary kidney infection” deteriorated as Evin prison prevented her from being sent to advanced treatment centers. Ms. Daemi was constantly nauseous during this period, had fever, and she vomited sanies.
Abbas Khani, the head of the Evin infirmary, claimed that since Ms. Daemi and her family were trying to form a medical record, he disagreed with sending her to clinics, except for centers that they themselves recommend.
Eventually, Abbas Khani ordered Ms. Daemi to be sent to Imam Khomeini Hospital. At that hospital, some tests such as ultrasound were taken from her.
Head of Evin Prison’s infirmary sent the result of the medical test of Imam Khomeini hospital, related to Ms. Daemi’s illness along with a note indicating that there was no evidence of medical problem, to the prosecutor’s representative, Mr. Haji Moradi.
On this basis, he accused Ms. Daemi of pretending and insulting the prison authorities and has brought a lawsuit against Ms. Daemi.
While Abbas Khani claimed that the results of his trustworthy hospital, Imam Khomeini Hospital, indicated that there was no medical problem, Daemi family provided a copy of the results to other physicians, who surprisingly spoke in contrary to the head of infirmary of Evin. The results of the tests indicated that her kidney bag was full of stones and there was severe kidney infection and this prisoner required immediate admission.
Haji Moradi, a prosecutor’s representative, quoted the opposing doctors and the warden of Evin Prison, who gave the results to the forensic and asked them for their opinion.
Medical experts also refused the head of infirmary’s claim and mentioned the results of Imam Khomeini hospital’s tests; show the emergency condition of Ms. Daemi, and believed that the removal of the gallbladder was possible.
It should be noted that Abbas Khani, the responsible of the infirmary of Evin, who insists on wrong reading of the results of the medical tests, in another attempt in a letter to the prosecutor’s representative claimed: “When Ms. Daemi’s gallbladder that suffers from the accumulation of stones, burst then we will send her for surgery, otherwise it will not be necessary.”
However in the physician’s diagnosis from last May, they believed it was on a controllable level of biliary dysfunction and laser could take off the stones, but now not only doctors are not sure of this method, but they say they would have to operate a surgery, which will be an infectious surgery.
Particularly, the progression of the disease and the increase of its dangers are evolving the infirmary of the Evin Prison and the head of the health department.
All of the above is while, Abbas Khani, head of infirmary of Evin prison has filed a case against Ms. Daemi with the charge of “Insulting”. The root of this case is Atena’s discussion with Mr. Khani because he accused her of pretending to be ill.
Regarding this case, Ms. Daemi received a summons letter from the Quds court.
Ms. Daemi also responded in writing to this summons. She wrote: “Because of one-sidedness of the court, because the law is in the interests of the state officials and I believe in the unfairness of the judiciary in the courts of the Islamic Republic of Iran, I do not participate in this court.
Unless Mr. Khani, the head of the Evin Prison infirmary, and Mr. Chahar Mahali, head of the prison, will not be prosecuted for medical malpractice or damaging me, I will refuse the trial.”
A source close to Atena Daemi in a conversation with HRANA’s reporter, added: “Given the fact that the performance of Evin’s health service in causing physical harm to Ms. Daemi, she has been told that she would be sent to Taleghani Hospital for surgery. However, Ms. Daemi disagreed with this referral and wanted to be treated or surgically treated by her trusted doctor in another hospital.”
It should be mentioned that Abbas Khani, head of the Evin infirmary, in a similar action against Maryam Naghash Zargaran, former prisoner of conscience, formed a case with the same reasons.
Atena Daemi, 29, was arrested on October 21, 2014 and was held for 86 days in solitary confinement of ward 2-A. She was transferred to women’s ward of Evin prison on January 18, 2015.
After several postponement of the court hearing, eventually in a court, presided by judge Moghiseh, judge of branch 28 of the Revolutionary Court in Tehran and in the presence of her solicitor and the other inmates (Omid Alishenas, Asuo Rostami, and Ali Nouri), she was charged with propaganda against the regime, gathering and collusion against the national security, insulting the Supreme Leader, insulting the Islamic Republic’s founder and concealing evidence of the crime because of her peaceful civil activities, and was sentenced to 14 years in prison on March 14, 2015.
Previously, she was released by converting the detention to the bail at the appeal court, on February 15, 2016.
Her sentence was reduced to 7 years in prison, in branch number 36 of the appeal court of Tehran by judge Ghomizadeh.
